When Mimosa was born, Viola understood immediately that something wasn’t right. Her sister seemed “ugly, but pretty as well” just like as new born babies, except that Mum, Dad and even Granny were behaving strangely. Viola realised that Mimosa was different but that she was also very special. This book tells the story of Mimosa together with that of her family as seen through the eyes, feelings and sensations of her sister, as they come to terms with the birth of a daughter who is disabled. In language that is both simple and spontaneous, the book deals with the themes of diversity, acceptance and the problems in relationships that arise as a result, reminding us that we are all different, unique, and therefore special.

THE AUTHORS

Beatrice Masini, texts: She was born in Milan where she lives and works as a journalist and translator of novels (including Harry Potter, from the third volume in the series onwards),and as childrens book editor for Fabbri Editori. She has also published over fifty books for children, many of which have been translated into other languages.
 

Svjetlan Junaković, illustrations: Painter, graphic artist and sculptor, he was born and lives in Zagreb. He has worked with numerous publishing houses as an illustrator of books for children, which have been translated into more than twenty languages. He teaches at the Scuola Internazionale d’Illustrazione in Sarmede (Tv) and in 2008 he won the Andersen Award for Best Illustrated book.

<<My sister collects picture postcards. They show beautiful houses from all over the world: pile-dwellings from Borneo, igloos from the North Pole, skyscrapers from the Yemen with alabaster and coloured glass windows and even houses from Mali with pointed roofs like fairy hair. When she grows up she wants to travel the world and go as far as Timbuktu, where the houses are made out of mud and look like sandcastles. But one day the postman brought a postcard which came from somewhere we didn’t know. It said: See you soon, but there was no signature and the picture wasn’t clear. So, my sister, whose name is Lia and who is eight years and six months old thought that it must be a nice new game. Every morning a mysterious new postcard arrived, and she carefully put them with all the others. In the end she understood. “It’s a jigsaw!” she exclaimed. “If you put all the postcards in order, you can see this wonderful dream place.” “Wonderful place?” I asked. “Sure, Francesco, how else would the place of your dreams be?” she suddenly replied.>>

<<I looked out of the window. Up in the sky, a cloud the shape of a tower was passing by. “I wish my house was a castle” I replied, “with a great big play area to play games like hide and seek and catch. With big tall trees and long paths to explore”. My sister started to laugh. “You’ll soon be happy” she said, “from tomorrow you and I are going to live in a tent!” “In a Red Indian Big Chief tent?” I shouted. “Yes, and all around we’ll have a great big park, much bigger than a castle, and in the park we’ll be able to find animals, trees, streams and lots of dream houses: bird nests, dens, burrows...” Then she stared me seriously in the eyes. “Francesco, you’ll see all the things that we can discover, but also other things that we can only imagine.” “Don’t worry, I’ve got more imagination than anyone” I smiled.>>

Dear River

The large scale format allows greater observation and facilitates discovery, but also allows adults to participate in the reading. Reading and listening to a story is a great emotional experience, and a strong link is forged between the reader and the listener. However the story as told by the reader is never the same as that heard by the listener since we are all free to imagine the story as we wish, in an original style that belongs to us alone. This is the strong point of each story. Listening and reading allow great freedom to think and to imagine, and thus the book becomes a happy opportunity for talking and exchanging ideas.

A new adventure of Lia and Francesco, starting from a leisure opportunity - a holiday in the country at their grandparents farm.

The two children explore and become familiar with the rural world, in the company of new friends. The volume includes three large posters with natural images to help readers to carry out a surprising journey through cultivated fields, crops, cattle and farmyard animals - to become aware of farming cycles.

Children are helped to know earth as a natural habitat as well as a development - through story full of information, adventures and exciting encounters.

<<Today I put on my tropical swimming costume, the one with the parrot fish and the barracuda on the back. Then I put on flippers, mask and snorkel and I dived into the bath tub. Barracudas are dangerous when there are lots of them, but one on its own doesn't frighten anyone.- What are you doing, Lia?- my brother asked. He had got into the bath without making a sound.- I came up from the depths, blowing out sand and bubbles. - I'm crossing the Red Sea - I replied. - Moses did that too a long time ago. - Francesco smiled with a face like a fish. Moses did it on foot. - I know. As soon as the tide goes out, I'm going to walk, too. I took out the plug, so the seawater goes away slowly,
leaving pools of transparent water among the rocks and clear coral on the bottom.
There were hidey-holes so small that only the tiniest fish and starfish could get into them.>>

<<Francesco is following me he's afraid that the current
will drag me away.
But I'm smiling. 

- Did you see the coral? - I ask him 

- Did you know that their branches are made of tiny white polyps, which spread out like so many upturned umbrellas?!
I go into a safe gorge, into a grotto.
I play hide-and-seek with lobsters, groupers and anglerfish. Francesco waves his arm, and goes into the den. It's my turn to stay below. I stretch out a finger, disturb the water, call the fish with soft words, clicks of the tongue, gentle sounds. There is a skate motionless and flat on the bottom. Suddenly it moves, raises its head and fills its chest: it swims so fast it could be flying.

It does a complete turn, then glides closer and lets me touch it. 

I shout out loud with surprise and happiness. The water is cold and the fish has a slippery skin.
Under the tail it has a long sharp point which can cause a nasty injury. Francesco tells me to watch out, but I'm not afraid of anything - I can speak the fish's silent language. Even a shark, if it meets someone who speaks its language, becomes nice. - Watch out, Lia, five jellyfish to port! - shouts Francesco, brandishing a net, but I avoid their terrible stinging tentacles. I'm almost at the shore, and I want to play on the beach.>>

Dear Dinosaur

The book balances between two literary genres: the diary and the scientific text. The tale starts by a dinosaur egg hatching, to tell its life and its world.The two characters, Lia and Francesco, travel throughout this world and speak about dinosaurs birth, growing up, reproduction, tipologies, behaviours and habits (such as fightings, hunting, defense). The big posters have been illustrated by Franco Tempesta and show to the reader an original and funny point of view. Thanks to the original format, the posters and the postcards, the children will phisically experience the book contents.

<<On the floor of our room are four thousand dinosaur prints. I’ve drawn them on white sheets of paper with colours and felt pens. Foot prints of Brachiosaurus, of Triceratops, even of T-Rex, the fabulous blue-eyed predator of old. -There aren’t four thousand, Lia- my brother says, counting.
-There aren’t four thousand for those who don’t have any imagination- I reply, as I measure the prints and, coming across some that are longer than my arm I let out a shout of admiration and fear. –Do you recognise the footprint of the big nailed Brontosaurus? It’s a herbivore from the Jurassic age: look how its prints go together with those of Dimetrodon, the sabre-toothed dragon.
-Help!- shouts Francesco. -No, don’t be afraid, that terrifying dragon disappeared 250 million years before the gentile sauro was born. He shuts up, sighs and shuts up again. –how do you know all these things, Lia? Children don’t like dinosaurs. -Who says so?- I laugh, showing my Bambiraptor teeth.>>

<<- I say so, Lia and so do lots of my friends. - Oh yes, Francesco? Now then, let’s say that I’m the scientist and you’re the egg. Do you want to play? No, dear, you still have to be born to find out how the world works. Then, if you don’t get eaten by one of those famous egg thieves like the Cretaceous, you can grow up and fly away like a Pteranodon, the early look-alike of the pelican. Do you want to be a boy or girl egg, Francesco? -A boy, Lia, a beautiful Pteranodon egg with a giant crest to frighten my rivals and impress all the flying girls- replied my brother. -Pity, Francesco, if you had been a girl egg, you could have grown up to be brave like a mother dinosaur. -Brave, really brave?- he asked. -Really really brave and really elegant, my little dinosaur egg. The mother Oviraptor laid her eggs in a circle like a pearl necklace. -Then I want to be an Oviraptor boy egg!>>

<<My brother is the perfect egg. Round, oval, long. He moves into all the shapes he can, opening and closing his arms. He tries to make himself as small as a lemon, or as big as a watermelon, but he’s never enormous. I watch him and measure him. Well done Francesco, never more than 50 centimetres. This is science, not science fiction! Francesco the egg is balanced in a nest of pink sand and our room is now the Kingdom of the palaeontologists. The Dinosaur footsteps make intricate little paths. The footprints are so clear that in some cases you can make out the folds of skin on their claws.
-Dinosaurs used to walk on their toes, my little egg, and here there used to be swamps, mud and weeds which have preserved their tracks for ever. Extinction, oui oui!- I say with a French accent. I am an International scientist. But suddenly Francesco gives a shout and nearly breaks: -I’m a boy egg, and when I grow up I’m going to be a fine father. Didn’t you know, Mademoiselle Lia, that Daddy Dinosaurs were affectionate as well? And that when the male looked after the nest there were more eggs?>>
